The Bare Blue Brilliance of the Jan Sarnowski Y Derwydd Noeth in Lapis Lazuli

The Y Derwydd Noeth is a minimalist 41mm watch featuring striking natural stone dials (lapis lazuli or malachite) with no numerals, allowing the material's beauty to take center stage.

The Bare Blue Brilliance of the Jan Sarnowski Y Derwydd Noeth in Lapis Lazuli

Earlier last year, I spent time with the original Y Derwydd, and it left a lasting impression.

A love affair is clearly on the horizon.

So what sets the Noeth apart?

It is naked.

The numerals are gone.

What remains is a pad printed sub dial at six o’clock and the J. Sarnowski emblem at twelve, rendered in Jan’s distinctive, vintage inspired calligraphy.

Jan’s skill in stone selection is one of his greatest strengths, and without numerals on the dial, the material is allowed to speak for itself.

Whether lapis lazuli or malachite, there is nowhere to hide, and no need to do so.

The dial radiates confidence.

Our example featured lapis lazuli, dominated by white calcite that recalls clouds drifting across a blue sky.

Flecks of pyrite catch the light as the watch moves on the wrist, adding a restrained sparkle.

With a sixteen centimetre wrist and a forty nine millimetre lug to lug measurement, concerns about fit were inevitable.

They proved unfounded.

At eleven millimetres thick, the watch has presence but remains easy to wear, sliding comfortably beneath a cuff.

The TY3620-2 movement is calibrated by Jan himself, delivering dependable timekeeping and a fifty three hour power reserve.

The entire watch is assembled by his hands. That level of care is evident in every detail.

Versatility is another key strength of the Noeth.

Two dial options, two hand colour choices, and a wide selection of straps allow for genuine personalisation, further enhanced by a variety of stitch colours.

The result, stated with complete confidence, is one of the most compelling watches available today, and at a scarcely believable price of three hundred pounds.
